For as lackluster a draft class this year’s NFL event featured, the night actually turned out to be exciting. Big names dropped and quarterbacks went in a cluster, all which left the Giants and Jets sitting pretty.
Day 2 of the NFL Draft begins later today, but I wanted to take a few minutes and give my assessment on both team’s selections.
Giants: Prince Amukamara, CB: The Giants did not need to fill a void at cornerback, but stuck with their best available player philosophy. It’s surprising that Amukamara was there when the Giants picked, considering many thought he’d be gone in the Top 13.
Amukamara has all of the tools to be a big-time cover in the NFL. Want a jaw-dropping number to back that up: Opposing quarterbacks completed just 18 passes against him at Nebraska all of last season. But as we know, college experience doesn’t always translate to the NFL.
In Amukamara’s case, the Giants won’t rush to get him on the field. Currently at cornerback, they have Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross. That trio totaled 188 tackles, nine interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Add in Amukamara and that might be the deepest group in the league.
Overall, great selection by New York. Based on where they selected Amukamara (19th overall), they may have gotten the steal of the draft.
Jets: Muhammad Wilkerson, DT: You knew Rex was going to go the defensive route so nabbing a defensive lineman was no surprise. Wilkerson is a big body (6-foor-4, 315 pounds) that he’ll use to plug up the middle. Having surrendered 304 points last season, New York could use help there.
Defensive end was a glaring must-fill position for the Jets after they let go of Vernon Gholston. The 24-year-old is considered one of the biggest busts in recent Jets memory. In three seasons, Gholston collected just 42 tackles and zero sacks. Gholston didn’t come in under Ryan’s watch, however, which made putting him on the chopping block much easier.
Ryan will do all he can to make sure Wilkerson succeeds. Wilkerson will have motivation, too. He’s a native of Linden, N.J. and played his college ball at nearby Temple. Family and friends will be in the stands each week.
Wilkerson finished his junior season with 9.5 sacks before declaring for the draft. If he gets even one in New York this season, fans will be happy.
